Leader Or Follower? Which One Are You?
According to Wordnet, the definition of a Leader is a person who rules, guides or inspires others. For this century, let’s focus on the latter two terms, guides and inspires. Wordnet defines a Follower as a person who accepts the leadership of another. 1 A little more acceptable than the Leader definition, and clearly to the point. As you read this, which role do you currently hold in the business environment that you currently work in each day? Can you change your current role? Most likely you can, although it will be easy for some, and require quite a bit of work for others.
As a leader or future leader, the science of leadership involves the observation, study and classification of leadership practices, resulting in a reliable explanation of what makes leaders effective. The art of leadership is about developing practical experience in the application of the leadership practices and methods resulting in the “science of leadership”. The science part is the learning, possibly your studies of leadership or observing, and the art is the staging of leadership, the doing or practicing the task at hand. It’s about practicing the leadership science (university) until you develop intuition. 2 So it might be safe to say that leadership is art, and not science. The learning process is the science, leading is the art. So is formal education the requirement to be a leader? No, a formal education may improve your chances of becoming a successful leader; however, it is not the guaranteed answer to success. The experiences and observation of leadership from an early age is probably just as helpful.
Leaders become who they are for various reasons. It’s not just time and place, although that may help in regard to the leadership path some individuals find themselves on. People are not so much “born” leaders, but they develop into leaders through a series of events that shape who and what they become in life.
